2. Hope

The certainty that God's grace can make up for any shortcoming in the heart

  • Mother Alphonse Maria placed all her hope in the mercy
of God and helped all who came to her, to have hope.

  • During the times of illness almost throughout her life and also during the time of aridity in which she never stopped to pray, she was full of hope because she expected everything from the Lord. Tormented by doubts about the goodness and mercy of God she turned to Jesus: "My Jesus, I believe in you, I hope in you and I want to love you”.

  • At the same time she was filled with great trust in the mercy of God.

  • Instructions given to her Sisters are full of exhortations to have trust: " Place all your confidence in the divine mercy and only and exclusively in the merits of Jesus Christ, our Divine Saviour“.

  • She often appealed to her Sisters: "How can we hesitate to embrace the cross just for a short time to hang on to the earth whereas the promised reward is to be eternal happiness. God is much more far-sighted than a father for his children and is more tender than a mother for us”.

  • She constantly prompted all people - especially the suffering, those who doubt, the poor, the sinners – to have hope; and she thanked. She never lost the virtue of hope but it increased in her more and more.

  • To the sick and dying she brought the message that God cares for them like a Father. It was this message which she – as a sick and suffering person - witnessed to by the way of accepting and enduring her illness. Following her example her sisters are invited to become angels of hope.

  • The goal of her work was to bring this great hope - especially to the dying - that God watches over them and that He is present.

  • For Mother Alphonse Maria hope was absolute trust in God. From Him she expected all graces necessary for her spiritual progress and for success of the work. She showed unshakeable hope especially in the difficult moments of her life. This attitude made her pursue her path unwaveringly.
