Spirituality of Mother Alphonse Marie
Having the firm resolution to fulfil the will of God always and in everything
In Mother Alphonse Maria we see the heroic practice of the virtue of temperance especially in her efforts to create silence and withdrawal in her surroundings and within herself, in order to listen to God and to be united with him.
Because of her temperament, her inclination to certain vehemence and unsteadiness the servant of God had to practise the virtue of temperance in a heroic way.
The servant of God constantly had to struggle against her natural tendency to certain vehemence, to stubbornness and intransigence and to find the right balance.
She firmly held to the following rule: to speak less and if at all, then only to say what is absolutely necessary; not to listen to unnecessary talks and to protect the eyes from curiosity.
She mortified herself and says about it: „I felt also a strong desire for physical acts of penance“.
With regard to food she showed great self-control and temperance. She wanted her daughters to have the same food as that of the poor.
There is no mention of any attitudes of impatience – not even during the painful events she had to endure at the time of the separation division of the Congregation.
The servant of God loved simplicity of life; she passed on this simplicity also to her Congregation as a characteristic.
The instruction of the Lord: „Suffer, remain silent and pray!” was conscientiously followed by her.
In her close relationship with Christ we find the source of her heroic temperance.
